Day Cream vs Night Cream: What's the Difference?

Duo of Hendiya® organic day and night cream: La Crème Lumière and La Crème Satinée

Day cream, night cream… is there really a difference between the two? Taking care of your skin is essential to preserving its youthful glow, and since skin doesn't have the same needs during the day and at night, you need to adapt your creams to the time of day — just like you would adapt your use of prickly pear seed oil as an evening treatment.

Applying La Crème Satinée, Hendiya® organic night cream, to the face

Day cream: protect and hydrate

As its name suggests, day cream is applied in the morning and is primarily meant to protect the skin from daily aggressors. Between pollution, extreme weather, dust, smoke or friction, facial skin can take a real beating. Day cream strengthens the skin's shield function by supporting the hydrolipidic film (the water-and-lipid film that covers and protects the skin), limiting the damage from free radicals that accelerate skin aging.

Day cream also hydrates and delivers ingredients suited to your skin type to prevent tightness, redness and irritation. Day creams generally have a lighter texture to allow makeup to sit well and to prevent shine throughout the day.

Result: deeply hydrated skin, less prone to irritation and external aggression.

Night cream: regenerate

Applied at bedtime after thoroughly cleansing the face, night cream is designed to regenerate the skin during sleep. It is a moisturizing cream, just like day cream, but delivers a more intense hydrating action.

Because night-time is when cell renewal is at its peak (skin cell activity can be up to three times higher at night than during the day), night cream supports this renewal cycle by delivering essential nutrients for repair. That's why night creams are often richer in water, fatty agents and nourishing, repairing actives. Some night creams also contain skin-beautifying actives: detoxifying, nourishing, anti-aging, and so on.

Result: soothed, detoxified skin, recharged with energy by morning.

Why use both a day cream and a night cream?

As you can see, day cream and night cream play entirely complementary roles.

With day cream alone, skin can quickly become dry from a lack of lipids, missing the richer supply that night cream provides.

Conversely, using only a night cream can leave skin feeling greasy, with a treatment too rich for daytime wear. This excess of lipids can lead to skin issues and interfere with makeup. Night treatments also aren't designed to offer a daytime "shield" effect, leaving skin less protected during the day.

For the best results, it's therefore recommended to use both creams and respect their intended time of application — ensuring your skin gets solid protection during the day, and a true regenerating "bath" at night.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a night cream in the morning, or vice versa?

It's not recommended long-term. A night cream like La Crème Satinée is richer and doesn't offer the protective action suited to daytime. Conversely, a day cream like La Crème Lumière doesn't provide the density of repairing nutrients your skin needs at night.

Do I really need both creams, or is one enough?

For the best results, both are recommended, each playing a different role. If you're starting with just one, prioritize based on your main need: daytime protection and makeup wear with La Crème Lumière, or intense overnight regeneration with La Crème Satinée.

Hello, on a recent trip to Marrakesh I fell in love with your day cream that I bought at the airport as we left as a chance buy. I love it! But now it is used up and I am seeking to find it here in Europe as the custom is too expensive on shipment from outside EU. Any chance it is to be found on the continent here? Best regards Lene:-)
